Turkey placecard tutorial

Your Thanksgiving table is sure to sparkle with this new twist on an old classic. Maker Team member Heather of @heathdon has added a dash of whimsy to the "hand turkey" craft that you made as a child. Follow along and make your own rafter of turkey placecards without even turning on your oven!

Turn this classic Thanksgiving craft into keepsake placecards. Our family makes them glittery for our family meal… it’s now a treasured tradition!

Project supplies


One 9 x 12" sheet of Gold Glitter Felt
One 9 x 12" sheet of Champagne Glitter Felt
One 9 x 12" sheet of Persimmon Pure Wool Felt
One 9 x 12" sheet of Begonia Pure Wool Felt
One 9 x 12" sheet of Clementine Pure Wool Felt
One 9 x 12" sheet of Hibiscus Pure Wool Felt
Tacky Glue
Scissors for Felt
Scissors for Paper
Embroidery Needle
Embroidery Thread
White Paper
Assorted Markers


1. Place your hand on a sheet of paper with your fingers spread wide. Trace around hand and fingers, making a turkey shape.

2. Next, draw a feather shape around each finger, as shown.

3. Cut out turkey. Cut feather outlines off hand shape.

4. Pin feather outlines to felt. Cut out feathers. This example uses a different color of felt for each turkey’s feathers. Cut fringe around the edges of each feather.

5. Pin paper hand shape to glitter felt and cut out. Repeat for remaining hand turkeys.

6. Sew bead onto glitter turkey for eye. Using scraps of felt, cut out beak and waddle. Glue in place.

7. Draw a line of glue on each feather as shown. Attach to back of fingers.

8. With a marker, write each name on paper and cut into a “turkey wing" shape as shown. Attach with a few drops of glue.
