Maker Team member Chelsea of @the_creativ.e.xplorer is sharing a beautiful new embroidered tutorial with us today! These Snowflake Ornaments with metallic embellishments are each unique and the perfect way to gift handmade this holiday season. Add some beads and sequins for extra sparkle. 'Tis the season!
Snowflakes are extra special to our family as they remind us of our angel baby. The day we delivered him, there was a giant April blizzard which froze time for us in the hospital and since then, every time we see them fall from the sky, we know it’s him looking down on us. Each Christmas, I look for the perfect snowflake ornament to add to our tree and this year I decided to make our own! These would make the perfect addition to any Christmas tree or gift for someone special!
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Time: 1 to 1 1/2 hours, plus drying time
Additional Supplies:
Snowflake Template (click to download)
Directions:
1. Download and print Snowflake Template above onto Sticky Fabri-Solvy. Follow manufacturer's directions on packaging for best results.
The way to remove Sticky Fabri-Solvy is to dissolve it in water. Therefore, felt must be pre-soaked to prevent shrinkage after the design is stitched. Visit this tutorial for more guidance on using Sticky Fabri-Solvy on felt.
2. For each color you plan to use, cut felt as shown below. Larger piece should extend about 1" beyond edges of outer embroidery hoop and smaller piece should be as wide as inner hoop. Set smaller piece aside for later.

3. Place larger piece of felt into embroidery hoop and tighten. Peel backing off one Snowflake Template, center and adhere to felt.

4. Choose desired thread color. I used one color for each and embellished with Silver metallic floss, but you can get as adventurous as you want! Use a combination of backstitch, lazy daisy, woven wheel, satin stitch and French knots to embellish.

5. After stitching is finished, remove felt from hoop and submerge in warm water to dissolve Sticky Fabri-Solvy. After it is dissolved, lay out felt to dry overnight.

6. Take smaller piece of felt from Step 2 and use inner embroidery hoop and invisible ink pen to trace circle onto felt. Cut out and set aside for hoop backing.

7. Once felt is dry, replace in the embroidery hoop. Cut around corners to round out excess felt.

8. With matching DMC floss, make a running stitch along outer edge of excess felt. Once you have gone all the way around, pull tight and knot to secure felt.
9. Take backing felt and whipstitch to back of hoop.

10. Cut two 3/4 x 1" pieces of Metallic Silver felt. Sandwich them on either side of top screw. Using Silver floss, blanket stitch up the side, across top and down opposite side. Tie a loop at the top for a real ornament effect.

Hang your creations on the Christmas tree for all to admire!
