We really love mushrooms at Benzie and these felt Mushroom Magnets from Maker Team member Mallory of @rabbitbrooktoys are the perfect variety! With a magnetic back, these domes can flourish on the fridge or white board. They're perfect for tacking up reminders, although some of us (me) are preoccupied with arranging them into artistic clusters. Grab your felt and let's make mushrooms!
Add a little fun(gi) to your space with these adorable felt mushroom magnets! This project is beginner friendly and can be customized to fit your style with any of Benzie’s eye-catching wool blend felts.
Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 1-2 hours for set of 3
Additional Supplies:
Mushroom Magnet Template (click to download)
Directions:
1. Print template above and trace patterns onto felt. Note which element requires two identical cuts. If you are customizing your felt selection, I recommend using a different color for Bottom of mushroom.
2. Arrange Center and Sides as shown. These components make the front of mushroom. Using a blanket stitch and coordinating thread, stitch edges 1 to 1 and 2 to 2. Keep knots on outside of this stitch, as element will be turned inside out in next step.
3. Turn mushroom front inside out.
4. Align bottom edge of mushroom front with arch of Bottom pattern piece. Bottom should be a different color than the rest of mushroom. Blanket stitch along the arches to connect pieces. Mushroom now has a front and bottom with an open, hollow back.
5. Use a strong glue (such as E6000) to attach magnet to Back piece. Let dry.
6. Align Back with the partially formed mushroom with the magnet facing inward. Blanket stitch along the edge, stopping before finishing to stuff mushroom.
7. Stuff mushroom with Polyfil. Once firm, finish stitching around the perimeter to close.
You’re all done! Make as many as you like to complete your charming set.
Do you have mush-room left on your fridge? Experiment with these possible variations: Print the pattern at different scales to create bigger and smaller mushrooms. Use a variety of different colors, or glue small white circles onto the outside of your mushroom for a classic mushroom look!
