No party is complete without a piñata! Today we're sharing a new tutorial that repurposes our Dala Horse deep etch die to create Piñata Ornaments. These felt, fringed fillies make fabulous decorations that last from party to party. Serve the candy on the side and leave the baseball bat at home. Things are about to get very festive!
Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 30 minutes, plus drying time
Additional Supplies:
Die Cut Machine
Ruler
Directions:
1. Use cutting machine and Dala Horse die to cut two horses from the same color felt. Position die cuts close together so there is still room on felt sheet.

2. With a ruler and rotary cutter, trim two 1" strips from felt sheet used for horses. In the same manner, trim two 1" strips from shorter side of remaining felt sheets.

3. Make even cuts about 2/3 of the way into each strip along one long side to create fringe.

4. To add fringe to cut out, draw a line of glue where top uncut portion of strip will be and then secure in place. Working from bottom to top, continue evenly spacing and gluing strips in the same manner. Continue until half of cut strips are used and horse is covered. A sheet of graph paper may be helpful for even strip placement. Place first horse under book to press.

Turn second horse to face opposite direction (mirror image) and repeat Step 4 with remaining strips. Glue strips with same spacing and color order as first side.
5. Once both sides are pressed and dry, flip to backside and trim around horse shape to remove excess fringe. Check finished horses. Use cut scraps and glue to fill in any gaps in fringe.

6. Cut a 6" length of elastic cord to create a hanging loop. Glue finished, fringed layers together with loop between. Press and allow to dry.

7. As a final step, use finger to lightly ruffle felt fringe for a real piñata effect!

There is enough felt in a 6 x 9" palette to make several piñata ornaments. Add them to a garland with tiny felt banners or tie them to a bag of candy for party favors!
