Just popping in to bring you this new felt food tutorial from Maker Team member Chelsea of @the_creativ.e.xplorer - Valentine Cake Pops! She's themed these sweet treats for the holiday but they'll be a sensation year round in the play kitchen. We also think they'd make a great gift topper or embellishment for a potted plant. It's a good thing they're too pretty to eat!
It’s the perfect time to bring some seasonal offerings to play kitchen food! These holiday cake pops are perfect for pretend play or in a vase on the kitchen table. Valentine's Day is just around the corner, so follow along to see how they're made!
Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: About 1 hour per cake pop
Additional Supplies:
Cake Pop Template (click to download)
Cake Pop Sticks
Rose Silk Ribbon, 4 mm - optional
Sparkle Paste in Snowflake - optional
Paintbrush - optional
Directions:
1. Cut a 1 x 9" strip of each color in the XOXO felt palette. Set aside.
2. Download and print Cake Pop Template. Trace and cut shapes from desired felt colors. This example uses the following color pairings:
RECTANGLE - Magenta, Pink
SQUARE - Red, Cranberry
OVAL - Flamingo, Peony
CIRCLE - Linen, Fuschia
HEART - Coral, Strawberry
SPHERE - Brown, Assorted felt colors

3. Using three strands of coordinating floss, attach smaller shape (frosting) to larger shape (base) with a running stitch.

All stitching will use three strands of floss unless otherwise noted.
4. Complete frosting details of each cake pop as detailed below. I only put details on one side of each cake pop and left the back side plain.
RECTANGLE - Use disappearing ink pen and ruler to mark X on Pink felt. Using DMC 600, backstitch over drawn X. Cut a small heart from Magenta and attach with a running stitch in center of X.

SQUARE - Cut two small hearts from Cranberry. Stitch hearts in alternating corners. Draw two Xs in opposite corners and stitch over each with DMC 902 and a reverse chain stitch.

OVAL - Cut two ¼ x 4" strips and one ¼ x 2" strip from Peony. Cut Vs into ends of one 4" strip to mimic bow ends. Glue uncut 4" strip into loop. Glue cut 4" strip to bottom center of loop. Wrap remaining strip around center and glue in place. Trim away any excess fabric. Use DMC 963 to tack bow to oval.

CIRCLE - Draw a squiggly line to mimic frosting. Embroider using a reverse chain stitch and DMC 3866.

HEART - Write “Love” in font of your choice. Using DMC 347, embroider using a reverse chain stitch.

5. Using scallop shears, trim around base (front and back) of each cake pop for a doily effect.

6. Gather 1 x 9" strips from Step 1 and pair with coordinating pops. (Strip should match frosting.) Line strip up with stitching on back side of embellished front. Using floss to match strip, use a running stitch to join pieces. Keep stitches underneath the frosting on front so it won't show. Pins or clips might be helpful with this step to keep fabric aligned.

Once strip is joined around shape, carefully cut off excess felt so ends meet.

7. Repeat Step 6 to attach back of cake pop. If you have extra floss, knot off end stitch and leave thread tail for stitching closed in Step 9.

8. Push Polyfil through opening in strip until satisfied with fullness.

9. Coat top quarter of cake pop stick with glue. Put stick into opening of cake pop, keeping it centered.

Use thread tail (or new thread, if necessary) to close opening in strip with a blanket stitch. Stitch tightly against cake pop stick.

10. For the final cake pop shape, cut hearts from desired colors in XOXO felt palette. I made a “shades of red” and “shades of pink” cake pop. Arrange hearts on Brown felt adjusting for overlap where petals meet. Attach each heart with coordinating DMC floss and tie a knot after each to keep the thread from interfering with finished sphere shape.

11. Use matching thread and attach adjacent “petals” with a blanket stitch.

When connecting the last two sides, stop halfway to stuff the cake pop, then continue stitching closed.

12. Apply glue to end of cake pop stick, as in Step 9, and place in opening. Use a running stitch around the remaining hole and pull tight to bring felt together. Secure until no gap remains.

13. As optional embellishment, cut remaining 1" strips into smaller pieces and attach to finished cake pops with glue or extra ribbon. Or paint Sparkle Paste onto the finished pops for a little shine!
