It feels appropriate to welcome new Maker Team member Melody of @mel_part with a party... hat. Melody is a crafty toddler mom and welcomes each milestone and celebration with a homemade touch! Her first tutorial is for a customizable and reusable felt birthday hat that can make a costume change faster than a toddler can change their mind. Now that's fast!
Each year on my daughter’s birthday, I craft a homemade party hat, just a little something extra to make her day feel magical. This felt version adds a clever twist: interchangeable numbers so it can grow with her, year after year. A cute tradition ready for many birthdays to come!

Self-adhesive Velcro
Freezer Paper - optional
The felt colors in the Supply List are for the finished version of hat pictured above. The interchangeable icons were made using additional felt colors.
Directions:
1. Print Birthday Hat Template above. Trace and cut base of hat from two coordinating felt colors.
2. Stack two base pieces together, aligning straight edges. Using DMC floss that matches the outer felt, blanket stitch along straight edges. Use a contrasting floss color to blanket stitch along curved edge.
3. Using guideline on template, shape base into a cone and glue overlapping portion to secure.
4. Use a pom pom maker and yarn to make pom for top of hat. Glue in place.
5. Select desired embellishments from template. Trace and cut from felt.
6. Attach Velcro to front center of hat and back of embellisments so they can be swapped out for different occasions. For a permanent option, glue embellishments directly to hat.
7. Use Glossy Accents to attach sequins to hat.
8. Glue ribbon ties to inner sides of hat. For extra stability, glue a small felt square over the end of each ribbon.
Now you have a finished birthday hat that can grow with your little one year after year!
Customize it with any color combination to match your celebration and make each birthday extra special.
