Heart Keychain Tutorial

Share

This Heart Keychain from Maker Team member Sarah of @happycamper_nyc is a quick and cheerful project that packs a creative punch! Whether you’re making just one as a gift or stitching up several for a class Valentine exchange, this tutorial is easy and beginner friendly. It's also extremely flexible, so you can add details and personalization on each felt heart for the recipient. We'd better get started because everyone we know could use a little extra love!

I used Benzie’s gorgeous Everbloom felt palette as a starting point for my colors because I love those pinks and cream! I also added in some primary colors to round out my batch. Make yours with one color, a bolder palette, school colors, or your Valentine’s favorite colors. We've made some suggestions in the supply list but the sky’s the limit!

Key Rings - optional

Directions:

1. Download and print Heart Template above. Cut out pattern and trace onto felt with disappearing ink pen. Trace two Hearts and one Tab (rectangle) for each heart. Tab can match Hearts or be an accent color.

2. If you’d like to add embroidery or embellishments to Hearts, do so now. Next, pin two hearts together.

3. Slide keychain loop onto Tab and fold over. Pin loop in position at top of the Hearts between two layers.

4. Using two strands of coordinating (or contrasting) embroidery floss, attach loop to Hearts with a straight stitch. Double the stitch, going in and out the same holes, to make it extra secure.

5. Next, angle the needle to come up just left of the Tab. Begin blanket stitching around perimeter, adding a stitch at the point of the Heart for neatness.

6. Pause stitching at second curve to add Polyfil. Finish blanket stitching closed.

7. Back at the top, go through straight stitch on Tab to finish stitching. Knot thread and feed thread into center of Heart. Snip end.

And you’re done! How cute is this?

Simple but striking. Small but meaningful. Each little heart keychain carries with it a lot of joy, care and love.
