Owl Ornament

Share

We're walking (and crafting) in a Winter Wonderland with Maker Team member Angele of @fabricandink. Angele is adding a woodland touch to the holiday season with her Owl Ornament made from an assortment of felted wool and snippets of felt. The combination of materials plus the added embellishments give this wise guy such lovely texture. We think owl ornaments would make a wonderful gift any time of year for that friend whooooo loves bird watching!

One of the soundtracks of countryside living is the sound of horned owls calling to each other - and sometimes we see them swoop from tree to tree! It would be easy to batch make these and create a festive parliament of owls for your holiday celebrations. You can also customize your ornament with different color and button choices.

Directions:

Use two strands of embroidery floss for all stitching.

1. Download and print Owl Pattern above. Use pattern pieces to cut the following:

FRONT BODY - Ecru felted wool
BACK BODY - Light Blue felted wool
CHEST - Light Blue felted wool
EYE SECTION - Light Green felted wool
WINGS - Dark Green felted wool
BEAK - Cinnamon felt
FEET - Cinnamon felt

2. Center Chest on lower part of Front Body. Using DMC 996, secure in place with a running stitch.

3. Place Beak above Chest so end is slightly overlapping. Backstitch along top of Beak with DMC 975.

4. Place Eye Section over top edge of Beak. With DMC 996, stitch large radiating stitches, like wheel spokes, on either side. Attach buttons in centers of radiating stitches.

5. Freehand cut a Flower from Ecru wool felt. To secure, make three stitches in center to form a star. With DMC 907, make three tiny stitches over previous ones for Flower center.

6. Add a backstitch stem to Flower. Cut three Leaves from different shades of Green wool felt and backstitch them around Flower and stem.

7. Backstitch around one Wing with DMC 907, leaving top edge unstitched. Backstitch a stem down the center and add lazy daisy stitch leaves. Repeat for second Wing making sure to mirror first, as shown below.

8. Backstitch Wings in place matching tops with top of Chest.

9. Place embellished Front Body on Back Body piece. Cut an 8" length of ribbon, fold in half and insert cut ends between layers at top of ornament. Pin. Insert Feet at bottom between layers and pin in same manner.

10. Blanket stitch around perimeter leaving a 1 - 2" opening for stuffing. Stuff just enough to give a rounded shape, then continue stitching closed.

Your new wise and solemn friend is now complete and ready to display!
