Spring is in full swing, and for many it marks the beginning of gardening season! It always seems like my gloves and spade make their way out of winter storage around Mother’s Day each year, and this year I’m marking the occasion with the cutest felt seed packets. Just imagine the joy that will grow. With pretty pastel petals and leaves blooming right off the base, these spring-inspired ornaments will brighten up any space. Make one or make the whole collection. They would be a great gift for the garden lover in your life. Or a teacher - after all, they plant the seeds that grow forever, right?

Directions:

This pattern uses Sticky Fabri-Solvy, which is dissolved in water. We suggest you pre-soak the felt to prevent shrinking after stitching according to this Sticky Fabri-Solvy tutorial. Once felt is completely dry, follow instructions below.

1. Download and print Cut Templates. Cut out each template and trace shapes onto designated colors of felt. Cut out felt shapes.

2. For each seed packet design, use a running stitch and two strands of floss to sew the corresponding Label Panel and White Panel shapes onto Packet Front. Use the following floss colors:

Green Packet - DMC 320
Yellow Packet - DMC 3821
Purple Packet - DMC 28
Pink Packet - DMC 3326

3. Download and print Assembly Guide onto Sticky Fabri-Solvy. Cut around each packet design and peel off backing. At this point, I took the small Price Stickers and aligned them on stabilizer.

Carefully place the assembly guides (including Price Stickers) onto corresponding felt bases.

4. Using a back stitch and two strands of DMC 3865, stitch “10¢” text on each packet. This step will adhere Price Sticker to base.

5. Using a split stitch and four strands of DMC 3865, stitch the “SEEDS” text on each packet.

6. Use the following stitches and DMC floss colors to add felt flowers and leaves to each packet:

Green Packet - Assemble flowers from back to front.
a. Light Pink Flowers - straight stitch, 2 strands, DMC 602
b. Dark Pink Flowers - straight stitch, 2 strands, DMC 783
c. All Stems - back stitch + satin stitch detail at base of flower, 4 strands, DMC 936

Yellow Packet - Assemble stems from back to front.
a. Leaves - Detached chain stitch, 3 strands, DMC 29
b. Stem - back stitch, 3 strands, DMC 29

Purple Packet - Assemble leaves in order of left, right and bottom.
a. Left Leaf - split stitch stem + fly stitch, 4 strands, DMC 3326
b. Right + Bottom Leaves - split stitch stem + fly stitch, 4 strands, DMC 602

Pink Packet - Assemble flower in order of leaves, base petals and top petals.
a. Leaves - straight stitch, 4 strands, DMC 320
b. Base Petals - straight stitch, 4 strands, DMC 3821
c. Top Petals - French knots (2 wraps), 6 strands, DMC 783

7. Once tops of packets are assembled, soak in cool water to dissolve Sticky Fabri-Solvy. If any remains, try soaking again or rinsing under a stream of water. Be careful not to wring or stretch felt. Felt will need to dry before moving onto next step. It can be helpful to dry felt between two paper towels.

8. Once packets are dry, finish assembling by sewing Packet Back onto back of Packet Front. Use a blanket stitch with the following DMC embroidery floss colors:

Green Packet - 2 strands, DMC 320
Yellow Packet - 2 strands, DMC 3821
Purple Packet - 2 strands, DMC 28
Pink Packet - 2 strands, DMC 3326

Only stitch through Packet Front and Back and not the flowers and leaves hanging over edge. You can simply pull them out of the way to slide stitches under them.

9. Finally, to add a hanger to seed packet ornaments, cut a length of corresponding DMC floss and tie a knot in one end. Pass thread front to back through an existing blanket stitch at top left of packet. Pass thread back to front through an existing blanket stitch at top right. Leave about 6" of floss as the hanger. Tie a knot and trim floss.

Whether you’ve got a green thumb or not, these seed packet ornaments are sure to bloom and grow - no watering needed!
