From Easter to Mother's Day, there's so much to celebrate in Spring! Maker Team member Heidi of @sisustitchery created this Woven Pinwheel Basket so you won't show up to any of the parties empty handed.
These cheerful, woven Pinwheel Baskets are a perfect addition to any spring jubilee! Filled with treats, it’s a simple, handmade gesture that feels especially meaningful this time of the year. If you’ve already tried some of our other woven basket tutorials, such as the Nordic Woven Hearts or Easter Basket tutorials, you’ll love this one!

Pinwheel Basket Template (click to download)
Directions:
1. Cut a 6 x 11 1/2” rectangle from Julep and Flamingo felt. Fold both rectangles in half and press with an iron.

2. Download Pinwheel Basket Template and transfer to felt using the freezer paper method. Larger pattern piece should be cut from Flamingo and smaller piece from Julep. Be sure to line up bottom edge of pattern marked "Fold" with folded edge of felt.

Alternatively, print the template onto cardstock. Trace pattern onto felt and cut out.
3. Cut out along outer edge. Then, cut along inner lines to create flaps. Wonder clips may be useful to hold everything in place while cutting.

Once cutting is complete, remove freezer paper.
4. Open smaller piece cut from Julep. Orient straight edge at bottom and curved edge at top.

5. Place folded larger piece, cut from Flamingo, inside. Straight edge should be to the right, curved edge to the left, and folded edge at the bottom.

6. Close Julep piece around Flamingo. Pull three Flamingo flaps to front of the Julep.

7. Begin weaving Julep flaps in and out of Flamingo flaps. Open Flamingo flap to the left. Take Julep flap closest to the top and slide it inside Flamingo flap.

8. Now, take the same Julep flap and move to Flamingo flap in the middle. Open Julep flap and slide middle Flamingo flap inside. It will look a bit bunched and messy. That is okay!

9. To finish the row, take the same Julep flap and move to Flamingo flap farthest to the right. Open Flamingo flap and slide Julep flap inside. Straighten out the row as much as possible.

10. Repeat weaving process across each row to create floral checkered pattern. The felt will bunch up a little but you’ll be able to straighten everything out at the end.

11. Once all the pieces are woven together, glue sides to hold everything in place. Place a few drops of tacky glue on any open edges.

12. Cut a small strip of felt for a handle. Open basket and glue strip to the inside. Allow to dry.

Your basket is complete! Fill it with blooms, candies or handwritten notes and leave it for a loved one on May Day, Mother's Day or any day of the week!
