Summer isn't summer without watermelon! Sink your teeth into this juicy felt watermelon slices tutorial by Laura of @sonicstitches. Ok, so these watermelon slices are more fuzzy than juicy, but they’re still the perfect summer addition to any play kitchen!
This step-by-step tutorial teaches you everything you need to know to make the perfect summer play snack, including more advanced techniques that will take your felt food work to the next level!
Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 2-3 hours per slice
Additional Supplies:
Watermelon Slices Templates (click to download)
Freezer Paper - optional
120 lb Cardstock
Clear Tape
The supplies listed will yield four watermelon slices.
Directions:
Prepare Templates
1. Print Felt Watermelon Slice Templates above onto freezer paper. Click here to learn how to transfer templates to felt using freezer paper.
If you do not have freezer paper, print templates onto regular paper. Cut out and use a heat-erasable pen to trace templates, then cut felt.
Print Cardstock Watermelon Slice Templates on regular printer paper. There will be additional felt and cardstock cut in later steps.
Make Interior Watermelon Box
2. Trace Cardstock Watermelon Slice Templates onto cardstock and cut along traced lines. Cut the following additional cardstock pieces:
- (1) 10 ¼” x ¾”
- (1) 6” x ¾”
3. Fold 10 ¼” x ¾” piece of cardstock in half. Next, tape the triangular Cardstock Watermelon Slice Templates to each long side of the 10 ¼” x ¾” rectangle.

4. Fill Interior Watermelon Box with Polyfil through the opening along curved top. Using a stuffing tool can help ensure the stuffing is dense to give the slices the weight of a stuffed toy.

5. Tape 6” x ¾” cardstock piece to curved top of the Interior Watermelon Box. Set aside.

Sew Felt Watermelon Slices
6. Using medium heat, transfer Felt Watermelon Slice Templates to Cherry Red felt. Transfer Felt Curved Watermelon Template to Mint felt. Transfer Felt Watermelon Seed Templates to Black felt. Cut on template lines.
Cut the following additional felt pieces:
- Cherry Red: (1) 11 ¼” x 1” rectangle
- Mint: (2) 1” x ⅝” rectangles
- Emerald: (1) 6 ¾” x 1” rectangle
- Citron: (3) 1” x 1” squares
7. Sew Seeds onto Felt Watermelon Slice pieces using a backstitch. Be sure to sew seeds in the same spots so the front and back of each watermelon slice are mirror images.

8. Next, sew the Felt Curved Watermelon Template to curved side of Cherry Red felt using a whip stitch. Only sew along interior curved edge. Do not sew short edges or exterior curved edge aligned with Cherry Red felt.

9. Sew two Mint 1” x ⅝” rectangles to the ends of Cherry Red 11 ¼” x 1” rectangle using a whip stitch. Only sew interior edge of the Mint felt as shown below.

10. Use sharp scissors to cut organic curves into two sides of each 1” x 1” Citron square.

11. Sew trimmed Citron squares to 6 ¾” x 1” Emerald rectangle using a whip stitch.

12. Sew one triangular piece of Cherry Red felt to each long side of 11 ¼” x 1” rectangle using a blanket stitch. For now, only sew Cherry Red edges together using matching thread.

13. Next, use a blanket stitch to sew Mint edges together. Pull the thread taught and tuck Cherry Red felt in where necessary so Mint completely covers it.

Assemble Watermelon Slices
14. Slide Interior Watermelon Box into felt Watermelon.

15. Sew Emerald and Citron felt onto curved top of the watermelon slice using a blanket stitch. Sew around all four corners.

And you’re done! Keep making slices until you have a platter full of delicious summer snacks!
