Potion Pillows DIY

"An assortment of felt and a few spools of thread. A pinch of something sparkly to chase away dread." Use this spell (and a few spare hours) to brew up some felt Potion Pillows this Halloween! The stitching and assembly are simple enough but the real magic is in all the glittering details you can add. Will your potions by sinister or sweet? Are you brave enough to make these concoctions in different flavors? Let's find out!

Background Patterns  (click to download)
Potion Bottle Patterns  (click to download)
Assembly + Stitching Guide  (click to download)
Iron
Scissors
Beading + Embroidery Needles
Stuffing Tool

Directions:

1. Download and print Background Patterns above onto cardstock and cut out. Trace two of each pattern onto Black felt. Cut out and set aside.

2. Download Potion Bottle Patterns above and print onto EZ Print Lite iron-on adhesive (smooth side.) Adjust printer settings to print at "Actual Size" in order for pattern pieces to be the correct size. There is no need to mirror images as this has already been accounted for in pattern.

3. Cut along dashed lines to separate pattern by colors. Place cut groups on coordinating color of felt with adhesive (rough) side facing felt. Iron onto felt following manufacturer's instructions.

4. Once cooled, cut individual pattern pieces along solid lines. Use Assembly + Stitching Guide to sort felt pieces for each bottle.

5. Place Background for Potion Bottle 1 on ironing board. Center main bottle on Background with about 1" border. One at a time, remove paper backing from felt components and press until completely adhered to felt. Sandwiching components between pressing paper is helpful to prevent any burn marks or adhesive transfer on iron's sole plate.

Repeat Step 5 for remaining Potion Bottles.

6. Use coordinating floss to stitch around perimeters of shapes. Use this opportunity to add stitched details, if desired.

7. For a particularly potent potion, switch to a beading needle and add sequins and beads to the bottles.

8. Once bottles are abundantly embellished, use coordinating thread to blanket stitch embellished front and remaining Background pieces together (right sides facing out.)

9. Stop stitching about 2" from end to add Polyfil or core wool stuffing. After stuffing, finish stitching closed.

Your Potion Bottles are ready - and you didn't even have to heat the cauldron!

If you're gifting these for Halloween, tie on a tag with some basic spell instructions. We can't have your neighbor turning into a toad!
