Felt Cinnamon Roll-ups Tutorial

Bring some fun to a child's play kitchen with this sweet Cinnamon Roll-ups set! From Maker Team member Kelli of @kellisfeltkitchen, this tutorial includes a silver baking tray and cinnamon rolls that can be rolled and unrolled over and over again. Swirls of white frosting add to the magic of these little felt treats that fit perfectly in the palm of your hand!

My inspiration for this tutorial comes from my love of baking and making felt play food - and I have always wanted a pattern for cinnamon rolls with a roll-up feature! Younger children may need help rolling them up. Always monitor children while playing with felt play food.

Iron
Permanent Marker
Thin Cardboard - optional

Directions:

1. Download Cinnamon Roll-ups Template above. Print Pages 1 and 2 on cardstock and Page 3 on freezer paper. Be sure template is printing at 100% scale.

2. Trace Cinnamon Rolls onto Toast and Brown felt using Frixion pen. Cut at least ½" inch (does not have to be exact) outside of traced line. Complete four times for each color.

3. Trace tray base and rim to felt side of Silver metallic felt. Cut out.

4. Use medium heat to iron Page 3 (printed on freezer paper) onto White felt. Cut out.

Cinnamon Rolls

5. Place Toast felt on top of Brown felt and, if needed, use clip or pin to hold together. Starting ⅓ way from end, use DMC 436 to make a running stitch along drawn outline. Stop when there is a 2" opening.

6. Trim around stitching to create a more narrow seam allowance. Do not cut near 2" opening, as this section will be used for turning and stuffing.

7. Flip Cinnamon Roll right side out, using wooden handle of stuffing tool to push out ends.

8. Fill with a light to medium amount of Polyfil. (See picture for reference.) Do not overfill or magnetic closure will not work. Stitch closed using ladder stitch and remaining length of floss.

9. Use permanent marker to draw small dots on sides of magnets that stick together. Be careful while handling the magnets, as they are very small and highly magnetic.

10. Roll Cinnamon Roll - not too loose or tight - and hold with one hand. Use Frixion pen to make two marks on felt for magnet placeement. One magnet is centered on Tan felt and the other near tip of Brown felt. Place a dab of glue to felt to adhere magnets with the dot facing up.

11. Stitch Toast and Brown Magnet Covers over magnets with corresponding floss.

Repeat Step 5-11 for additional Cinnamon Rolls.

Frosting

12. Glue two felt Frosting pieces together with generous amount of glue. Press and let dry for at least one hour or overnight. Repeat three more times.

Tray

13. Using DMC 415, whip stitch short ends of Rim together to make one long piece.

14. Use same floss to whip stitch Base pieces together, metallic sides facing out. As an optional step, place a cardboard Base (cut slightly smaller) between felt layers to increase sturdiness.

15. Using a blanket stitch and DMC 415 floss, attach Rim to Base. Carefully hold Rim at a 90 degree angle while sewing. Once you reach other end of Rim, trim excess felt and stitch Rim ends together.

Your Cinnamon Roll-ups are ready. They are so realistic, you can almost smell them!
