Skill Level: Beginner
Time: One hour per keychain

Toy Keychain Templates (click to download)
The felt and thread listed above will make all five toy keychains shown in this tutorial. But these cute little keychains are scrap-friendly! If you have scraps in colors you like, use those.

Directions:
1. Print the Toy Keychain Templates linked above onto freezer paper. Click here to learn how to transfer templates to felt using freezer paper. Once the templates are transferred, cut out the felt around the templates, but do not cut on the felt template lines just yet.

Freezer paper is highly recommended for this project if you’d like precision in the small stars and the toy holes. If you do not have freezer paper, print templates onto regular paper. Cut out and use a heat-erasable pen to trace templates, then cut felt.
2. Now that you have smaller pieces of felt to work with, cut along template lines using small scissors, which make it easier to cut curves.

3. A small circle will be cut for the front of each toy keychain. This is where the toy is slipped into the keychain. To start cutting, fold circle on the template in half and make a small cut that does not extend beyond the perimeter as shown below.

Next, extend cut toward edge of the circle. Cut out circle slowly, moving the felt as you cut.

Do not cut out stars on the front piece templates. These are guides to glue stars onto the front in a later step.
4. For all pieces, peel off freezer paper after you are done cutting.

5. Use glue to attach small stars to keychain front pieces. Use as many stars as you’d like and place them anywhere or follow the guide on templates.

6. Next, attach keychain strap to swivel keychain. Begin by sliding strap through bottom of the swivel keychain.

Add a small amount of glue to the end of one side of keychain strap. Press two sides of keychain strap together.

7. Attach keychain by adding a small amount of glue to center top of back piece. Press one side of keychain strap into glue as shown below. Let glue dry on all pieces before moving to next steps.

8. For Moon toy keychain only, use 12wt thread to whip stitch crescent shape onto the moon circle.

9. For all keychains, use 12wt thread to blanket stitch keychain front and back together.

10. At keychain strap, do not put needle through all layers of felt. Instead, point needle straight up, blanket stitching through keychain front and one layer of keychain strap, as shown below. When you pass through the keychain strap, continue a normal blanket stitch around remainder of toy keychain.

And now you’re done! This project is so sweet and fast, you’ll want to make a whole collection of toy keychains!

Note for supervising adults: Be sure to check that toys are securely inside the keychains before leaving the house, so they don’t fall out.
